Here’s the problem:
Medical debt is a pressing issue in Massachusetts, with an estimated 1 in 6 residents struggling to pay off medical bills. The issue is exacerbated by high healthcare costs in the state, which are the 4th highest per capita in the country.
Medical debt is not only a financial burden for individuals and families, but it also has a ripple effect on the broader community. A study by the Urban Institute found that medical debt leads to decreased credit scores, difficulty accessing loans, and reduced savings, all of which impact long-term financial stability. Medical debt can lead to delays in seeking medical care, worsening health outcomes and increasing long-term healthcare costs. Moreover, medical debt disproportionately affects historically under-resourced communities. Therefore, there is a critical need to address medical debt for promoting both financial and health equity in Massachusetts.
This is where your donation to our campaign for RIP Medical Debt can help so many in need in Massachusetts!
How to help:
RIP Medical Debt purchases medical debt in bulk and completely abolishes it. The individuals who will benefit are low income and burdened by their medical debt. Every dollar on average relieves about $100 worth of medical debt! With a $10 donation, you can abolish $1000 worth of medical debt, which is about the average debt associated with a billing account. If we raise our goal of $11,000, we will be able to relieve about $1.1 million of unpaid medical debt in Massachusetts!
Please consider donating to this great cause! All donations are accepted and tax-deductible. Donations in excess of our $11,000 goal will go towards debt cancellation in other states and/or future debt in Massachusetts. Donors have the option to remain anonymous. Beneficiaries are anonymous.
Lastly, we are especially challenging the students from Boston area universities to help us erase medical debt in Massachusetts!

How RIP Works
Over a hundred million Americans, one in three, struggles with the weight of medical debt.
-
You make a donation
We use data analytics to pinpoint the debt of those most in need: households that earn less than 4x the federal poverty level (varies by state, family size) or whose debts are 5% or more of annual income.
-
RIP buys medical debt at a steep discount
We buy debt in bundles, millions of dollars at a time at a fraction of the original cost. This means your donation relieves about 100x its value in medical debt.
-
Together we wipe out medical debt
People across the country receive letters that their debt has been erased. They have no tax consequences or penalties to consider. Just like that, they’re free of medical debt.
